NYPD Deploys Foot Patrols Along Southern Boundary After Assault

NEW YORK — A 20 percent increase in nighttime foot patrols will take effect immediately along Central Park South, NYPD officials announced Thursday. The security surge follows a slashing incident near Bethesda Fountain that left a 24-year-old woman injured.
Security Enhancements Cover High-Traffic Midtown Boundaries
The 22nd Precinct is focusing its additional resources on the pathways connecting Columbus Circle to the Grand Army Plaza entrance. Officers will patrol in pairs during the high-risk hours between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. to deter criminal activity.
This immediate action plan was drafted after community leaders raised concerns about dark sections of the southern walkways. The park, which normally closes at 1:00 a.m., has seen a steady rise in pedestrian traffic during warm summer nights.
Visible Patrols Positioned Near Central Park Tower Corridor
Under the new security plan, several tactical units will be stationed at the southern gates directly opposite the central park tower residential skyscraper. This corridor serves as a major crossing point for residents and hotel guests walking into the park after dining in Midtown.
"We are establishing a highly visible police presence along Central Park South," said Chief of Patrol John Chell during a Friday press conference. Chell emphasized that the department is using mobile light towers to illuminate previously dark trail intersections.
Precinct Commander Outlines Targeted Tactical Deployment
Deputy Inspector William Gallagher explained that crime mapping data was used to identify specific blind spots along the wooded trails near Wollman Rink. Officers on foot will be supported by auxiliary units operating remote-controlled surveillance carts.
These automated carts are equipped with high-definition cameras that feed live video directly to the precinct's command center on the 86th Street Transverse. This technology allows dispatchers to deploy officers quickly to areas where suspicious activity is reported.
Historical Safety Trends on Southern Park Walkways
Statistically, the southern portion of the park has remained one of the safest urban recreational zones in the United States over the last decade. However, isolated crimes of opportunity occasionally disrupt this trend during the peak tourist season.
In response to prior security concerns, the city council authorized a budget increase in 2021 to upgrade the emergency call box network across the park's southern third. Many of these call boxes have now been retrofitted with direct-to-precinct intercoms and flashing strobe lights.
Community Groups Advocate for Brighter Pathway Illumination
Local neighborhood associations are calling on the Central Park Conservancy to accelerate its planned upgrades to the historic gaslamp-style light poles. Many of the existing fixtures still use low-wattage bulbs that leave long stretches of path in deep shadow.
Civic leaders argue that improved lighting is the most effective long-term deterrent to late-night vandalism and personal larceny. The city is currently reviewing proposals to install energy-efficient LED fixtures that mimic the historic aesthetic while providing superior illumination. Visitors seeking more information on safety can review the nighttime park safety measures recently approved by the community board.
Frequently Asked Questions
How late is Central Park open to the public?
Central Park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. The NYPD enforces park closure hours, and visitors found inside the park boundaries after 1:00 a.m. may be issued a summons for trespassing unless they are using the active transverse roads to cross Manhattan.
Where are the newly deployed NYPD foot patrols located?
The increased foot patrols are concentrated along the southern boundary of the park, specifically between Columbus Circle at West 59th Street and Grand Army Plaza at Fifth Avenue. Officers are focused on paths near Wollman Rink and the Hallett Nature Sanctuary.
