NEW YORK — The New York City Police Department has released surveillance footage of a suspect wanted in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in Central Park earlier this year. Police are actively seeking public assistance to identify and apprehend the individual, who reportedly attacked a woman at knifepoint after offering to walk her home.
The incident, which left the victim with broken teeth and significant trauma, unfolded during the early morning hours of July 12, 2026, near a less-frequented pathway in the northern section of the park, close to the North Woods. NYPD officials describe the suspect as a male, approximately 5’10” to 6’0” tall, with a medium build, last seen wearing a dark hoodie and sweatpants. DNAinfo previously covered similar incidents in the area.
Unfolding Details of the Assault
According to a statement released by the NYPD’s Special Victims Division, the victim, a 32-year-old woman, was walking alone through Central Park shortly after midnight when she encountered the suspect. He engaged her in conversation, offering to escort her through a darker, more isolated path. Once in a secluded area, the suspect allegedly brandished a knife, assaulted her, and then fled the scene on foot.
“This was a brutal and unprovoked attack on a woman enjoying the park,” stated Captain Elena Rodriguez, commanding officer of the 20th Precinct, which patrols a portion of Central Park. “Our priority is to bring this individual to justice and ensure the continued safety of all park visitors. We are dedicating significant resources to this investigation.”
The victim managed to make her way to a nearby street and call for help. She was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries, including multiple fractured teeth. Detectives have been working tirelessly since the incident, canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing hours of surveillance footage from both within and surrounding the park.
Police Urge Public Vigilance and Assistance
The released video, captured by a park camera near Conservatory Water, shows a blurry but identifiable image of the suspect walking briskly away from the scene approximately 20 minutes after the reported assault. The NYPD is urging anyone who recognizes the individual or has information related to the case to come forward immediately.
“Even the smallest detail could be crucial in identifying this suspect,” Captain Rodriguez emphasized. “We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling, but public cooperation is vital. If you see something, say something.” A dedicated hotline has been established at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) for anonymous tips, and a reward of up to $2,500 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. This initiative highlights the NYPD’s ongoing commitment to maintaining public safety across New York City.
Members of the Central Park Conservancy also expressed their grave concern over the incident. “The safety of Central Park visitors is paramount,” said David S. Weinberg, Vice President for Park Operations. “We are working closely with the NYPD to review our surveillance infrastructure and patrol strategies to deter such heinous acts.”
Community Reaction and Safety Measures
The news of the assault has prompted heightened awareness among regular park users and local residents. Community groups in neighborhoods bordering Central Park, including the Upper West Side and Harlem, have organized informational sessions to discuss personal safety strategies when using the park, especially during evening hours. Some residents expressed apprehension, noting the park's tranquil evening atmosphere can sometimes belie underlying risks.
Patrols by both NYPD officers and Central Park Conservancy security personnel have been visibly increased, particularly in the northern and lesser-lit areas of the park. The NYPD also issued a reminder for individuals to travel in groups when possible, remain aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity immediately. Efforts to enhance lighting along certain pathways are also under review by the Parks Department.
This incident underscores the complex balance between maintaining Central Park as an accessible urban oasis and ensuring robust security across its 843 acres. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are hopeful that the newly released video will lead to a swift resolution, restoring peace of mind for the millions who cherish this iconic green space.
